παραφυάς, άδος, ἡ, (παραφύω) A. side-growth, 1. in plants, sucker, off shoot, opp. παρασπάς, HP 2.2.4, cf. I Enoch 26.1 : metaph., παραφυάδι ἔοικε τοῦ ὄντος EN 1096a21, cf. 1.330 (pl.). 2. in animals, branch of a vein, Oss. 18 ; of certain appendages in the ἀστακός, HA 526a29, cf. PA 672b27. 3. metaph., of branches of a discussion, 2.7.2, EM 784.28, etc. ; also, τὸ πρός τι παραφυάδι ἐοικός 6.2.16. [ῡ in Fr. 80, perh. metri gr.]
