οἰκονομικός, ή, όν, A. practised in the management of a household or family, opp. πολιτικός, Alc. 1.133e, Phdr. 248d, Oec. 1.3, Pol. 1252a8, etc. : Sup., [κτημάτων] τὸ βέλτιστον καὶ -ώτατον, of man, Oec.p.30 : hence, thrifty, frugal, economical, Mem. 4.2.39, 65 (Comp.) : ὁ οἰ. title of treatise on the duties of domestic life, by Xenophon ; and τὰ οἰ. title of treatise on public finance, ascribed to Aristotle, cf. Cyr. 8.1.14 : ἡ -κή (sc. τέχνη) domestic economy, husbandry, Plt. 259c, Mem. 3.4.11, etc. ; οἰ. ἀρχή defined as ἡ τέκνων ἀρχὴ καὶ γυναικὸς καὶ τῆς οἰκίας πάσης, Pol. 1278b38 ; applied to patriarchal rule, ib.1285b32.
