τέρσομαι, Pass., with aor. inf. τερσῆναι, τερσήμεναι (v. infr.), as if from ἐτέρσην:—A. to be or become dry, dry up, ἕλκος ἐτέρσετο παύσατο δʼ αἷμα the wound dried up and the blood was staunched, Il. 11.267,848; οὐδέ μοι αἷμα τερσῆναι δύναται 16.519; θειλόπεδον τέρσεται ἠελίῳ is baked by the sun, Od. 7.124; εἵματα δʼ ἠελίοιο μένον τερσήμεναι αὐγῇ 6.98; ὅταν [τὰ ῥάκεα] ἐν ἡλίῳ τέρσηται Hp. Mul. 1.11; ὄσσε δακρυόφιν τέρσοντο his eyes became dry from tears, Od. 5.152. II. Act. first in later Ep. (Hom. using only τερσαίνω), aor. subj. τέρσῃ (-σει codd.) Theoc. 22.63; inf. τέρσαι Nic. Th. 96,693 (v.l. τέρσον both times); opt. Med. τέρσαιο ib.709:—Hsch. cites ἐτέρρατο· ἐξηράνθη. (Cf. Lat. torreo, tostus, Skt. tŕṛṣyati ‘to be thirsty’.)
