Στύξ, ἡ, gen. Στῠγός, (στυγέω) A. the Styx, i.e. the Hateful, Il. 8.369: also the nymph of this river, Hes. Th. 361. 2. a well of fatal coldness in Arcadia, Hdt. 6.74, Str. 8.8.4, Paus. 8.18.5. II. as Appellat., monster, reptile, ἄτρωτον . . ὑπὸ στυγός (στύγος cod.M) A. Ch. 532 (sed leg. στύγους). 2. piercing chill, as of frost, in pl., αἱ στύγες εἰσδύονται εἰς τὰ σώματα Thphr.
