στεφάνη [ᾰ], ἡ, (στέφω) A. anything that surrounds or encircles the head, etc., for defence or ornament: I. brim of the helmet, βάλʼ ἔγχεϊ ὀξυόεντι αὐχένʼ ὑπὸ στεφάνης εὐχάλκου Il. 7.12; σ. χαλκοβάρεια 11.96; the helmet itself, ἐπὶ στεφάνην κεφαλῆφιν ἀείρας θήκατο χαλκείην 10.30, cf. 2.726f. 2. as a womanʼs head-dress, diadem, coronal, Il. 18.597, h.Hom. 6.7, Th. 578, Ec. 1034; found on statues, IG 22.1126.31 (Amphict.
