σάκος [ᾰ], εος, τό, Ion. gen. σάκευς Sc. 334 (Cretan word acc. to AB 1096):—A. shield, Il. 7.222, 18.478, 20.268, 1.52, etc.: it was concave, and hence sts. used as a vessel to hold liquid, Th. 540. 2. metaph., shield, defence, βωμός, ἄρρηκτον σ. Supp. 190. (Prob. cogn. with Skt. tvác- ‘skin, hide’.)
