φρίξ, ἡ, gen. φρῑκός: (φρίσσω):—A. ruffling of a smooth surface. I. ripple caused by a gust of wind sweeping over the smooth sea, ὑπὸ φρικὸς Βορέω Il. 23.692; μελαίνῃ φρικὶ καλυφθείς, of Proteus coming to the surface, Od. 4.402; Ζεφύροιο ἐχεύατο πόντον ἔπι φρίξ ripple spread over the sea from the west wind, Il. 7.63; μαλακὴν φρῖκα φέροι Ζέφυρος AP 7.668 (); θάλασσα φρικὶ χαρασσομένη ib.10.2 (), cf. 14 ().—Poet. word for Prose φρίκη.
