ὑποφθάνω [ᾰ], aor. ὑπέφθην 4.307; part. ὑποφθάς Il. 7.144; also in Med. aor. part. (v. infr.): later aor. 1 ὑπέφθᾰσα (v. infr.):—A. haste before, be or get beforehand, ὑποφθὰς δουρὶ μέσον περόνησεν getting beforehand he pierced him through the middle, Il. l.c.; ἔγραψεν ὑποφθάσας Pomp. 21:—also in part. Med., κτεῖνεν ὑποφθάμενος Od. 4.547. II. c. acc., to be beforehand with one, l.c., Aem. 26, etc.:—Med., τὸν ὑποφθαμένη φάτο μῦθον Od. 15.171, cf. AP 9.227 (Bianor).
