ἐπιχθόνιος, ον, Ep. Adj., (χθών) A. upon the earth, earthly, freq. in Hom., as epith. of ἄνθρωποι, ἄνδρες, βροτοί, Od. 8.479, Il. 1.266,272 : abs., ἐπιχθόνιοι earthly ones, men on earth (cf. χαμαί), opp. ἐπουράνιοι θεοί, 24.220, cf. Pi. O. 6.50, B. 4.15, etc.; so ἐ. γένος ἀνδρῶν Pi. Fr. 213.3 ; ἐ. δαίμονες who haunt the earth, Hes. Op. 123. 2. in pl., natives of a country, D.P. 459,1093. 3. terrestrial, opp. marine, ἑρπετόν Opp. H. 2.425.
