ἄπιος (B), η, ον, A. far away, far off, distant, τηλόθεν ἐξ ἀπίης γαίης Il. 1.270, 3.49, Od. 16.18, cf. OC 1685. II. Ἄπιος, α, ον, Apian, i.e. Peloponnesian, said (in this sense) to be derived from Ἆπις, Apis, a mythical king of Argos, Supp. 260, cf. 2.5.7; Ἀπία γῆ, Ἀπία χθών, or Ἀπία alone, the Peloponnese, esp. Argolis, Ag. 256, OC 1303, 14.650b, etc.; cf.Ἀπίς prob. in 4.1564. [The former word has ᾰ, the latter ᾱ; yet OC 1685 uses signf. I with ᾱ, and later Ep. Poets have signf. II with ᾰ, cf. 13.] (Commonly derived from ἀπό, as ἀντίος from ἀντί; and expl. ἐξ ἀπίης γαίης by ἀλλοτρίας ἢ ξένης ἢ μακρὰν οὔσης, cf. 8.6.9.)
