αἰδοῖος, α, ον, (αἰδώς) A. having a claim to regard, reverence, or compassion (cf. αἰδώς), in , only of persons, sts. of gods, θεῶν γένος Th. 44, cf. Op. 257, Il. 18.394; more freq. of human beings, as kings, Il. 4.402, members of family, esp. wife, 21.460, servants, ταμίη Od. 1.139, women generally, παρθένος Il. 2.514; then of the helpless or those needing protection, guests, Od. 9.271, suppliants, 7.165: abs., αἰδοίοισιν ἔδωκα 15.373: Comp. -ότερος καὶ φίλτερος 11.360 (later -έστερος 172):—after of things, ξείνων αἰ. λιμένες 112.3: Sup. -ότατον, γέρας P. 5.18; but -έστατος . . χρυσός O. 3.42, cf. 74A.
