κοτύλη, ἡ, A. anything hollow (πᾶν τὸ κοῖλον κοτύλην ἐκάλουν οἱ παλαιοί Apollod. ap. Ath. 11.479a, cf. Sch.Il. 22.494). 1. small vessel, cup, Il. 22.494, Od. 15.312, 17.12, Ar. Fr. 350, cf. Ath. 11.478d: prov., πολλὰ μεταξὺ πέλει κοτύλης καὶ χείλεος ἄκρου ib.e, Zen. 5.71. b. metaph., = κοτύλων, D.H. 19.5. 2. cup or socket of a joint, esp. of the hip-joint, κατʼ ἰσχίον, ἔνθα τε μηρὸς ἰσχίῳ ἐνστρέφεται, κοτύλην δέ τέ μιν καλέουσι Il. 5.306sq., cf.
