Hellespont or sea of Helle (daughter of Athamas, who was drowned therein), now the Dardanelles, Il. 2.845, 4.38, etc.:—sts. taken to include the Propontis, 1.57, etc.:—the adjacent country, 2.9, etc.: in this sense without Art. in Att. Inscrr., IG 12.106.16, al.: said to be used of the Aegean, 7 Fr. 58.
