δρυοκολάπτης, ου, ὁ, A. woodpecker, of which Arist. distinguishes four species, the great black, Picus martius, the green, Picus viridis, and the spotted (both greater and less). Picus major and minor, HA593a5, cf. 614b7, Str. 5.4.2; = Lat. picus, D.H. 1.14:—also δρυκολάπτης, Ar. Av. 480,979; 2. δρῠοκόλαψ, Hsch. s.v. ἵπτα (prob. l.); δρῠοκόπος, Arist. PA 662b7.
