χορηγός, ὁ (also ἡ), Dor. χορᾱγός 23.44, Lys. 1315 (lyr.): (χορός, ἡγέομαι):—A. chorus-leader, like the later κορυφαῖος, θεοὺς συγχορευτάς τε καὶ χορηγοὺς ἡμῖν δεδωκέναι τόν τε Ἀπόλλωνα καὶ τὰς Μούσας Lg. 665a: generally, leader of a train or band, πῦρ πνεόντων χ. ἄστρων, of Dionysus, Ant. 1147 (lyr.); χ. δελφίνων Hel. 1454 (lyr.). II. at Athens and elsewhere, one who defrays the costs for producing a chorus, χορηγῶν ἀποδεικνυμένων ἑκατέρῃ τῶν δαιμόνων δέκα ἀνδρῶν 5.83; χορηγὸν καταστῆσαί τινα IG 22.141.34; χ. κατεστάθην εἰς Θαργήλια 6.11; καταστὰς χ. τραγῳδοῖς 21.1, cf. 3; supplied by the φυλαί in turn, 20.130, cf. 1.11; χ. αἱρεθείς, ἱμάτια χρυσᾶ παρασχὼν τῷ χορῷ, ῥάκος φορεῖ 204.5 (troch.); used of a woman, Milet. 1(7).
