Χῖος, α, ον, (contr. from Χίιος) A. of or from Chios, Χῖαι [κρηπῖδες] Art. 62, cf. 11, etc.; σύκινα PCair.Zen. 33.12 (iii B. C.); Χ. ἀοιδός, i. e. Homer, 7.47; χ. ἄνθρωπος 35.52: prov., Χῖος δεσπότην ὠνήσατο ‘caught a Tartar’, 269. b. esp. οἶνος Χ. Ec. 1139: freq. without οἶνος, Fr. 216.3, etc.; ἐν ἀκρήτῳ Χίῳ AP 7.422 (). 2. as Subst., Χῖοι or οἱ Χῖοι the Chians; without Art., 1.142, 1.19, 3.32, etc.; with Art., 8.15,22, etc. II. ὁ Χῖος (sc. βόλος), = κύων v1, the worst throw of the dice (cf. χιάς), i. e. the external face of the ἀστράγαλος ( Oss. 38), with the ace-dot, opp. Κῷος (q. v.), Χῖος παραστὰς Κῷον οὐκ ἐᾷ λέγειν 23, cf. Cael. 292a29, AP 7.422 (), 7.204, 205, 4.74: hence prov., Χῖος πρὸς Κῷον ibid. (in HA 499b29 χῖα is cj. for ἰσχία, κῷα for κῶλα). 2. οὐ Χῖος ἀλλὰ Κεῖος, v. Κέως. III. Χία, ἡ, = μαστίχη, Gloss.
