ἄμπωτις, ἡ, gen. εως, Ion. ιος, for ἀνάπωτις (ἀναπίνομαι), v. infr.:— A. being sucked back, i.e. of sea, ebb, opp., πλημμυρίς or ῥαχία (Ion. ῥηχίη), Hdt. 2.11, 7.198, 8.129, Arist. Mete. 366a19, Placit. 3.17, Agatharch. 32, etc.: in pl., ebb and flow, tides, Arist. Mu. 396a26, Peripl.M.Rubr. 45, App. Hisp. 1, Hdn. 3.14.6.—The full form ἀνάπωτις only Pi. O. 9.52, Scymn. 110, and later Prose, Plb. 10.14.2 (s. v.l.), Arr. Ind. 22.8: gen. -πώτιδος, Agatharch. 101. 2. retiring of a stream, Call. Del. 130. 3. metaph., τῆς ἀδολεσχίας ὥσπερ ἄμπωτιν λαβούσης Plu. 2.502d. II. return of humours inward from surface of body, ἄ. τῶν χυμῶν Hp. Hum. 1, cf. Erot. Fr. 8; of blood in the lungs, Gal.
