πνῖγος, εος, τό, A. choking, stifling, of the effects of heat, and so stifling heat, Hp. VM 16, Aër. 10, Ar. Av. 726, 1091, Th. 7.87, etc.; ἐν ἡλίῳ τε καὶ πνίγει, διὰ καύματός τε καὶ πνίγους, Pl. R. 422c, 621a; πνίγους ὄντος τὰ νῦν Id. Lg. 625b: in pl., Hp. Epid. 3.2; ἔν γε χειμῶσιν καὶ πνίγεσιν Pl. Phlb. 26a. II. in the Parabasis of the Att.
