Μαραθών, ῶνος, ὁ, also ἡ, Pi. O. 13.110: (μάραθον):—A. Marathon, so called from its being overgrown with fennel (Str. 3.4.9), Od. 7.80, Hdt. 1.62, etc.: Μαραθῶνι at M., Ar. Eq. 781, etc.; Μαραθῶνάδε to M., And. 1.107; Μαραθωνόθεν from M., Aristid. 2.218J.:—Adj. Μᾰρᾰθώνιος, α, ον; Μ., τά, festival in celebration of the victory of Marathon, D.H. 5.17.
