κύω, post- form of κυέω (aor. 1 in Ep., v. infr. II): I. in pres. and impf., of females, conceive, Λάβδα κύει τέξει δὲ κτλ. Orac. ap. 5.92.βʹ, cf. Fr. 609, Lg. 789e, etc.; κύω μῆνα ὄγδοον ἤδη DMeretr. 2.1; κ. ἀπό τινος Gall. 19: metaph., κύει πόλις ἥδε 39. 2. rarely c.acc., to be pregnant with, οὐδὲ κύουσι πολλὰ κυήματα HA 543b22; παιδίον DMeretr. 2.4: metaph., ἡ ψυχή μου ἀεὶ τοῦτο κύουσα (al. κυοῦσα) διῆγεν Cyr. 5.4.35:—Pass., to be borne in the womb, τὰ κυόμενα παιδία Pr. 860a21, Or. 2.99c. Τυφάονι κύσατο Κητώ 112.—The forms κυέω and κύω seem synonymous, but κυέω (κυῶ) is the better-attested form in Att. Prose (κύοντα only v.l. in Tht. 151b, κύοντες is read in HA 544a23 (v.l. κύονες, ποιοῦντες) , κύοντα ib.585a3, κυόμενα (v.l. -ούμενα) Pr.l.c., κυόμενον (v.l. -ούμενον) GA 730b4, but κυοῦντες HA 610b3; ἐκύομεν ls. 59.13).—The pres. κύω has ῠ in verse, but forms of κῠέω can be restored by altering the accent.—The causal sense belongs only to the aor. ἔκῡσα.
