γεραιός, ά, όν, (γέρων, γῆρας) A. = γηραιός, old: in Hom. (who never has γηραιός) always of men, with notion of dignity (v. infr.), cf. Pi. N. 4.89; ὁ γεραιός that reverend sire, Il. 1.35, etc.; γεραιέ 10.164, etc.; but γεραιάς (acc. pl. fem.) 6.87 (cf. 270, 287) is f.l. for γεραίρας, v. γεραρός: Comp. γεραίτερος Od. 3.24, A. Eu. 848, Hdt. 6.52; γονῇ πεφυκὼς γ. (-τέρᾳ codd.) S. OC 1294; freq. in political sense, οἱ γ. the elders, senators, X. Cyr. 1.5.5, Pl. Lg. 952a, IG 14.2445 (Massilia): Sup. γεραίτατος Ar.
