γεραιός, ά, όν, (γέρων, γῆρας) A. = γηραιός, old: in (who never has γηραιός) always of men, with notion of dignity (v. infr.), cf. N. 4.89; ὁ γεραιός that reverend sire, Il. 1.35, etc.; γεραιέ 10.164, etc.; but γεραιάς (acc. pl. fem.) 6.87 (cf. 270, 287) is f.l. for γεραίρας, v. γεραρός: Comp. γεραίτερος Od. 3.24, Eu. 848, 6.52; γονῇ πεφυκὼς γ. (-τέρᾳ codd.) OC 1294; freq. in political sense, οἱ γ. the elders, senators, Cyr. 1.5.5, Lg. 952a, IG 14.2445 (Massilia): Sup. γεραίτατος Ach. 286, Lg. 855e, etc.; rarely, = πρεσβύτατος, eldest, 15.139.
